About the Goddess Flora & her Floralia:
(Description compiled by Amalya 1-14-13)
The Month of May is named after the goddess Maia, (the wife of Mars & Mother to Mercury.) And Flora, The Queen of Spring in the Roman pantheon (or Chloris in Greek), was married to Zephyrus, the west wind. Flora is also the twin sister to Fauna, the goddess of wild creatures and their names and associations have survived today in our common English usage in biological reference to plants (Flora) and animals (Fauna).
FLORALIA: To the Roman common people, the “Floralia” was a significant, colorful & rowdy festival celebrating the beginning of May in honor of their Goddess Flora, the Protector of Flowers. The origin of the Floralia is attributed to the command of the oracle (a priestess called a “sibyl”) in the Sibylline books to build a temple to Flora and make offerings to her to assure the protection of the new blossoms.
“FLORA′LIA, or Florales Ludi, a festival which was celebrated at Rome in honour of Flora or Chloris (Greek). It was solemnized during five days, beginning on the 28th of April and ending on the 2nd of May. It was said to have been instituted at Rome in 238 B.C., at the command of an oracle in the Sibylline books, for the purpose of obtaining from the goddess the protection of the blossoms.” *

FLORA THE GODDESS: The origins of the Goddess Flora have several myths. One described by Ovis: “Myths about her are recorded in Ovid’s Fasti, Book V: A nymph called Chloris was kissed by the West Wind, Zephyrus, and was turned into Flora. (This story is the subject of Sandro Botticelli’s oil painting Primavera.) According to Ovid, Flora helped Juno become pregnant with Mars by giving her a magic flower”.*

Another myth
credits the origin of Flora as a deified harlot who gave her wealth to the
people to celebrate her birthday.* (Apparently “Flora” was a common name of
prostitutes). Regardless, the Goddess
Flora was also the patron deity of the prostitutes and this gave the
celebration of the Floralia it’s more flamboyant and “licentious” nature.*
