"Rhythmic Wisdom: The Healing Power of the Drum, Ritual, and Rhythm" Introduction to Frame Drumming & the Practices of the Bee Priestess |

The frame drum is the world’s oldest drum and was played mainly by women for thousands of years as the primary trance-inducing technology for religious and ecstatic rituals. In ancient myth and legend, the frame drum is associated with the Bee Goddess, who is said to awaken a buzz of ascending consciousness and descending spiritual grace in those who practice these drumming rituals. During this powerful weekend, we will use all the tools of the ancient priestesses as we will learn a synthesis of frame-drumming techniques from India, the Middle East, and North Africa. We will invoke the elemental energies of earth, water, fire, and air, creating sacred space through ritual, and focusing on the heart chakra to help bring balance to ourselves and the world. We will also practice bhramari pranayama (bee breath), and the traditional mantra and mudra of the Hindu Bee Goddess. FRIDAY Night will be a Slide Presentation on “When the Drummers Were Women” plus an experiential demonstration/concert—this night is open to the public (men & young adults welcome!) plus the retreat registrants. SAT & SUN retreat workshop will additionally offer hands-on training on the frame drum, interactive chanting, meditation, movement and sacred ceremony. No prior musical experience necessary! |

Schedule: FRIDAY: 7:15 pm to 10:00 pm | SAT: 9:30 am to 9:30 pm (Includes Lunch & Dinner) | SUN 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
COST: Just Friday night: $45 (Men/Women/Young Adults). Or just SAT/SUN Workshop: $250. Or Full Retreat package Fri-Sun: $275. Two reduced-rate work exchange spots available for Sat/Sun workshop on a first come basis. All programs open to Men and Women.
REGISTRATION: Advance registration required (by Sept 18 to ensure you will have a drum to use). Space is limited to 50 people for the Friday night presentation and 30 people for the weekend workshop. Retreat/workshop registration includes lunch & dinner on Sat, snacks & drinks, & handouts. Overnight accommodations are not included. Contact Amalya for referrals.

Layne Redmond has followed an extremely unusual path specializing in the small hand-held frame drum played primarily by women in the ancient Mediterranean world. From 1981 through 1990 she performed and recorded the first contemporary frame drum compositions with percussionist, Glen Velez for European and American labels. During this period she intensively researched the playing styles and history of the frame drum in religious and cultural rituals culminating in her book, When The Drummers Were Women.
Redmond is recognized as one of today's most exciting performers on the frame drum. She offers workshops around the world, has produced numerous music and instructional CDs & videos, and has been featured in many music festivals worldwide.
